3 Day Ushuaia Highlights

3 days / 2 nights

Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world; it is nestled between the shores of the Beagle Channel and the jagged and majestic Martial Mountains, an undeniably picturesque setting. It is the capital of the Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and Southern Atlantic Islands Provinces, and enjoys a tax free status, making it not only a fantastically beautiful city where one can enjoy the sea, mountains and forests, but also a great place for shopping; as one can find many imported goods and products as well as an array of regional ones. While Ushuaia has significantly grown in size in recent decades, it maintains the quaint, isolated feel of a pioneer city.

Itinerary
Day 1 - Ushuaia:

  • You will be met at the airport by one of our company representatives, and transported to your comfortable hotel.
  • Evening at your leisure.

Day 2 - Tierra del Fuego National Park and the Beagle Channel:

  • After breakfast, you will take the Tierra del Fuego National Park Tour, where you will enjoy a ride on the southernmost train in the world, which makes a circuit around the National Park, this activity will be followed by a short guided trek.

At 12 km westwards from Ushuaia it is located the entrance to Tierra del Fuego National Park, the only one with a seacoast in our country.
It has a surface of 63000 hectares where lengas (Nothofagus pumilio), sour cherry trees, ñires (Nothofagus Antarctica), calafates, notros (Embothrium coccineum) (Embothrium coccineum), flowers such as orchids, violets and senecios (Asteraceae). A trip around this
national park, in addition to the several panoramic views of Beagle Channel framed by the mountains and forest, approaches us to naure. The chance of breathing sea air as well as the forest smell is a privilege for only a few people. We follow the road that traces a very
thin strip in the mountain foothills; we go past peat bogs, beavers' dams and finally we arrive in Lapataia River. After crossing the river, the road becomes winding and full of bushes with some panoramic views like Verde Lagoon. Kaikenes and storks come here every summer.
If the passenger wants to feel like the main character in a short story, we suggest taking the hike along the path that leads to Negra Lagoon or Beavers' Path to interpret these curious animals' work. So it starts the last section to Lapataia (National Route 3 end) where
the old inhabitants of this area left their legacy: the shelly deposits, some incredible archaeological sites. Before returning to Ushuaia we stop at Roca Lake whose colour changes according to the weather. There we can savour a chocolate in the café.

  • In the afternoon, you will go on a short cruise through the Beagle Channel

SEA LIONS' AND BIRDS' ISLANDS: Have you ever thought of taking pictures of an over-300-kilo sea lion surrounded by its harem at about 3 metres away? And besides, posing specially to look more elegant? This is only one of some of the unusual pictures we can take during the trip. In very comfortable
modern ships we sail around Bridges Islands and the Archipelago and Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, rocky outcrops in the middle of Beagle Channel that go together with the mountain chains that close this magnificent interoceanic passage. We sail opposite Túnel Farm where some archaeological work takes place. We see colonies of cormorants, albatrosses, petrels, "cauquenes" (Chloephaga), etc. This is an excellent opportunity to watch sea mammals and birds without disturbing them
Distance: full circuit 30 km. It departs from and returns to the tourist wharf.
Duration: 2 hours and a half.

Day 3 - Ushuaia:

  • You will be transported to the airport either after breakfast, or at your leisure.

At only 7 km away from Ushuaia centre by following a picturesque road we arrive in the base of one of the Andean ski courses. It becomes a little difficult to arrive soon since the continuous panoramic views that appear in each road turn oblige us to stop to take photographs. Once we arrive, we are opposite Martial Glacier where we can go hiking to approach the "eternal snows" with the chance of being in contact with the forest limit area where the huge lengas (Nothofagus pumilio) become stunted until they disappear to continue the advance on the glacier moraine.

Escondido and Fagnano Lakes

Distancia: a total of 130 km.
Duration: 7 hours.
Get ready to cross the Andes Range. Yes! This excursion takes us to travel around a wide variety of landscapes. In all cases the forest accompanies us. When we leave Ushuaia eastwards, we stop to watch the whole Old Prison; we go past the industrial area and once we go deep into the forest, Velo de la Novia Waterfall will surprise us. On bordering Olivia Mount base, the imposing Alvear Hill can be seen at the front with its eternal snow and a huge peat bog valley at its base. This valley is called Carbajal Valley that later changes its name into Tierra Mayor and Las Cotorras. When the road goes past Rancho Hambre, the ascent starts. At 430 metres over sea level, in Garibaldi Pass, we can enjoy an unforgettable view of Escondido and Fagnano Lakes. We descend towards Escondido Lake shore where Petrel Inn is located. When we leave the inn, we take national route 3 again to start our travel by the sawmill area where lengas (Nothofagus pumilio) make a dense even forest. A few kilometres ahead a detour leads us to the biggest lake in Tierra del Fuego. Fagnano Lake is so big that some birds lose their way and wind makes them fly over it.
That is why we can see some albatrosses and petrels. On approaching the shore, water transparency invites us to meditate. Our return is by the same national route 3 straight ahead to Ushuaia.
