Taste the energy of Latin America’s third largest city, the dynamic Buenos Aires, before heading south to the contradictory, yet equally alluring region of Patagonia. Often dubbed ‘the Paris of the South’, Buenos Aires is a culturally rich city blessed with fine architecture, proud traditions and an energetic lifestyle. In contrast the Patagonian towns of El Calafate and Ushuaia are tranquil sedate towns which allow for exploration of some of the planet’s most breathtaking mountain scenery, including Lago Argentino, one of the country’s greatest lakes. The Patagonian cities of Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales in Chile have unspoiled nature, magnificent views and southern beech forests next to prime pastureland for cattle-raising. The Torres del Paine National Park (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) offers stunning views of snowy peaks, glaciers and icebergs, lakes of turquoise and ultramarine and valleys filled with wildflowers. Encompassing 15 peaks above 2,000m with visible remnants of frozen magma from past volcanic eruptions, the national park is must-see.
