INTERLAGOS CIRCUIT HISTORY

interlagos

In the first twenty years of the World Championship Brazil had shown very little interest in motor sport. All that changed in the early 1970s when Emerson Fittipaldi exploded on the international scene. His success led to the inauguration of the Brazilian Grand Prix and the venue chosen was Sao Paolo – Emerson’s home town.

The Interlagos circuit had been built in 1940 and consisted of a sweeping outer section with a tight infield – an unusual concept in its day.

At just shy of five miles in length the circuit was also one of the longest tracks on the calendar. Located just a few miles from downtown Sao Paulo attendances have usually been enormous especially in the boom years of Brazilian racing.

The fact that the track was built within a natural amphitheatre has resulted in spectators being offered an excellent view of more than half of the circuit, regardless of where they sit.

Interlagos in one of the toughest tracks on the current round of Formula 1 circuits and having been built on basically unstable ground the surface is full of lumps and bumps. Unusually the circuit runs anti-clockwise and is at high-altitude, so races are particularly hard on the drivers. The ever-present heat and humidity of Brazil also add to the driver’s discomfort

The famous Nazca lines, located in the south west of the country, are a set of gigantic ancient zoomorphic and geometric figures, some simple and others more complex. All images are mapped onto the surface and can be seen in their entirety only from the air. There are more questions than answers about how between 200 BC and 700 BC, inhabitants of this desert were able to draw such immense images on the ground. Close by is located Cerro Blanco, which, at a height of 2, 078 meters, is the highest dune in the world, an ideal destination for sand boarding and para-gliding in Peru.

Peru is a country with a strong indigenous tradition that can be seen in the colorful markets where each item can be viewed as a small masterpiece. Earlier this year the Dakar Rally was held in South America rather than its traditional North African setting due to terrorism threats against the event. For 2010, this trend will continue, with organizers of the Dakar Rally confirming that South America will once again replace Africa as the site for the rally.

Beginning on New Year’s Day next year, the rally will last a little over two weeks. During this time, participants from almost 50 nations will start in Buenos Aires, then travel across Argentina and Chile before returning to the Argentinean capital to finish the race.

In total, the Dakar Rally will take competitors on an 8,600km loop around South America, including such milestones as crossing the Andes, traversing the Atacama Desert with five sand stages, and a journey to the city of Iquique. Around three million people in South America will watch the event live, and over one-third of the world’s population is expected to view it on TV.
